Habitat Flathead Mentorship Program
There is a lot involved in building a home with Habitat Flathead, and once a new Habitat homebuyer signs our partnership agreement, it’s time to get to work! The entire process can be overwhelming. There are Habitat terms like ‘sweat equity’, banking and mortgage language, everything construction, and a whole community of people dedicated to working and volunteering on behalf of our homebuyers.
This past fall, we launched a mentorship program. Our mentors make a year-long commitment, typically a few hours each month. Together, mentors and mentees will follow a flexible, time-friendly curriculum that covers topics like financial accountability, home maintenance, community connection, and building long-term stability.
We are looking for mentors who are fiscally responsible and experienced homeowners, patient and good listeners, and able to relate and share their knowledge and experience. Mentors can help answer questions and concerns, keep Habitat staff updated, and address some of the small stuff that can pop up.
By becoming a mentor, you’ll help families feel supported every step of the way, and help set them up for long-term success.

GOALS
The Habitat Flathead Mentorship Program is designed to make sure that new Habitat homebuyers feel encouraged, confident, and prepared for homeownership.
Our mentors help us:
Build supportive relationships with homebuyers, guiding them in financial accountability, home maintenance, community connection, and asset management skills.
Empower and assist families through their first 12 months of construction and homeownership.
Promote sustainable homeownership by helping reduce risks such as delinquency, debt accumulation, or foreclosure.
OBJECTIVES
Through the Habitat Flathead Mentorship Program, we aim to ensure every new homebuyer:
Understands Habitat Flathead’s homeownership requirements, along with expectations from related partners (Montana Board of Housing, NeighborWorks, Land Trust, etc.).
Develops financial knowledge and skills to successfully budget, manage expenses, and make consistent mortgage payments.
Engages positively in their new community, building connections and contributing as active neighbors.
Learns how to care for their home and protect their investment during their first year of ownership..
